Mano Juan (Isla Saona)

Mano Juan is a small fishing village located on Isla Saona, within the Parque Nacional Cotubanamá (Parque Nacional del Este) in the Dominican Republic. It is the island’s only permanent settlement, offering visitors a rare glimpse into authentic Caribbean coastal life.

The village is famous for its wooden houses painted in bright Caribbean colors, creating a picturesque atmosphere that contrasts with the surrounding natural landscapes. Walking through Mano Juan feels like stepping into a living postcard, where local families welcome visitors with warmth and hospitality.

One of the highlights of Mano Juan is its sea turtle conservation project, where travelers can learn about efforts to protect endangered species, such as the hawksbill and green turtles. Depending on the season, visitors may even witness turtle hatchlings being released into the sea, making it a memorable eco-experience.

Life in Mano Juan revolves around fishing, handicrafts, and eco-tourism. Visitors often find artisans selling souvenirs, women cooking traditional Dominican dishes, and children playing in the sandy streets. Unlike the beaches of Saona that attract thousands of day-trippers, Mano Juan offers a quieter, cultural perspective of the island.

Accessibility: Mano Juan can only be visited as part of a guided excursion to Isla Saona, typically departing from Bayahibe or Dominicus. Travel time from Bayahibe is approximately 45 minutes by speedboat or 1.5 hours by catamaran, usually included as part of full-day tours.

Visiting Mano Juan adds a cultural dimension to a Saona trip, allowing travelers not only to enjoy pristine beaches but also to connect with the community that calls this paradise home.
