Altos de Chavón

Altos de Chavón, located within Casa de Campo in La Romana, Dominican Republic, is one of the country’s most unique and enchanting cultural attractions. Designed in the style of a 16th-century Mediterranean village, it was built in the 1970s by Italian architect Roberto Coppa and Dominican master craftsman José Antonio Caro, becoming a timeless landmark that blends history, art, and breathtaking landscapes.

Walking through Altos de Chavón feels like stepping back in time. Its cobblestone streets, stone buildings, and artisan workshops create an authentic old-world ambiance. The village is home to art galleries, boutiques, a design school affiliated with Parsons School of Design in New York, and the Archaeological Regional Museum, which showcases pre-Columbian artifacts from the island’s indigenous Taíno culture.

The centerpiece of Altos de Chavón is the amphitheater, a 5,000-seat open-air venue overlooking the Chavón River. Since its inauguration in 1982 with a performance by Frank Sinatra, it has hosted international stars such as Sting, Elton John, and Andrea Bocelli.

Beyond its cultural offerings, Altos de Chavón is a scenic viewpoint. From its terraces, visitors enjoy panoramic views of the Chavón River and the lush landscapes that have served as backdrops for Hollywood films like Apocalypse Now and Rambo.

Whether exploring its art studios, attending a live concert, or simply enjoying the views, Altos de Chavón is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking culture, history, and beauty in the Dominican Republic.
